Tips for Preventing Mildew During Winter Boat Storage
Mildew can be a boater’s worst enemy, especially during winter storage. Follow these preventative measures to keep your boat mildew-free and ready for the next season.
How to Prevent Mildew During Winter Storage
Mildew thrives in damp, poorly ventilated environments, making winter storage a critical time to take precautions. Here’s how to keep your boat in pristine condition throughout the off-season:
1. Remove Stains and Patch Holes
Start by cleaning your boat thoroughly to remove dirt, grime, and stains that can promote mildew growth. Use cleaners designed for marine surfaces, ensuring they are safe for fabrics, vinyl, and other materials. If there are cracks or holes, seal them with a high-quality marine-grade sealant to prevent water intrusion that could lead to mildew.
2. Ensure the Boat is Completely Dry
Before covering your boat, make sure it is thoroughly dry. Mildew thrives in humid environments, especially when condensation forms inside a sealed space. Focus on drying all interior and exterior areas, and pay special attention to hard-to-reach spots where moisture might linger.
3. Promote Air Circulation
Proper air circulation is essential to prevent stagnant, humid air from creating an environment where mildew can grow. Ensure all airways are open, and consider installing vents for additional airflow. Solar or electric-powered vents can be particularly effective. If possible, use a dehumidifier to reduce humidity levels.
4. Cover the Boat Properly
Invest in a winter-appropriate canvas cover or shrink wrap. Before covering, remove all soft goods like bedding and cushions and empty storage compartments. If using a tarp, periodically uncover the boat to allow for natural air circulation. For shrink-wrapped boats, install vents to encourage airflow.
